Virgin Territory A Claudia Seferius Mystery Book 2 edition by Marilyn Todd Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Making promises is so much easier than following through with them. If only Claudia had known exactly what she was getting into when she first agreed to be Sabina's chaperone.
The vivid descriptions of the food, clothing, homes, and social customs in Claudia's world made me feel as if I was living in ancient Sicily. Some of the socially acceptable customs at this time and place are considered extremely immoral in the twenty-first century. Including these scenes in this piece without imposing modern day values on them adds authenticity to the plot.
Once again Claudia is portrayed as a woman who is an intense object of desire to almost every man she meets. In the future I would be quite curious to see if Ms. Todd intends this to be another sign of Claudia's narcissism or if she is actually that irresistible to such a wide selection of men. There are a few scenes in this story that make me think some of Claudia's interpretation of other people's thoughts and reactions are meant to show her self-centered tendencies. I hope future Claudia mysteries explore this possible plot twist in further detail.
Virgin Territory can easily be a standalone novel, but as someone who has read the first book in the series, I, Claudia, I was pleasantly surprised by how the main character has changed in the interim. Claudia's lack of character development was one of the criticisms I mentioned in my first review. While she doesn't show as much personal growth in her second adventure as I would have preferred to see, there were a few key scenes in this plot that demonstrate that she is aware of her environment and is slowly changing as a result of her experiences.
The mystery in this tale was well paced and thrilling, though. Every time I thought I'd pinned down the killer or figured out Sabina's true identity Ms. Todd introduced new clues that upended all of my theories. Her ability to slowly dole out the truth to the reader in such a way that one never knows what to expect next makes me want to read everything this author has ever written.
Virgin Territory kept me guessing until the very end. I look forward to reading more installments of this series, and I recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery that is full of surprises.

A mere five weeks after Gaius Seferius leaves Claudia a wealthy widow, she's haring off on another adventure. When Claudia agrees to escort a retiring Vestal Virgin home, with ulterior motives of course, she never imagined it would land her in the middle of a murder or two. Once again it's up to Claudia to solve the `who' and `why' for state investigator Marcus Cornelius Orbilio.
Five weeks after inheriting Gaius' fortune Claudia's bemoaning the fact his fortune is tied up in property and a wine merchant business. She knows squat about viniculture. Under the weight of her fortune she returns to the races and gambling. Out of the blue a letter from Sicily comes to her rescue. An old friend of Gaius', Eugenius Collatinus, has offered his home while she grieves with one small request escort home his granddaughter, Sabina, who has spent the past thirty years as a Vestal Virgin. Claudia knows an opportunity when she sees one and agrees. With the loyal Junius and Cypassis at her side and Drusilla in a specially built crate Claudia sets sail for Sicily.
In Sicily little and few are what they appear on the surface and Claudia is faced with one puzzle after another. The Collatinus family proves to be quite the viper's nest. Claudia again finds herself reluctantly searching for a killer.
Marcus providentially arrives in Suilium right after the murder. He and Claudia immediately begin their verbal sparring while tap dancing around the truth, neither willing to be the first to admit their feelings. The chemistry and byplays between these two is addictive.
The mysteries are complicated enough to give several viable suspects and keep you guessing.
I'm especially pleased that Claudia, Marcus and cast, while growing and developing, stayed true to character and didn't go off in the weeds. I'm delighted to have Claudia and Marcus join Gordianus the Finder and Decius Caecilius Metellus on my favorites list.
I'm highly anticipating my next trip back in time to ancient Rome, Claudia Seferius, and Marcus Cornelius Orbilio. Whatever they get up to you can bet it'll be interesting.

I was unable to finish this book because the main character was appalling.
Def recommend it for all lovers of historical mystery. You'll fall in love with the heroine and her frenemy Obilio and the whodunit is unexpected!
Fast and detailed I love the mystery and the descriptions are enthralling and it really takes you there. Cannot wait 2 read the next one!
Very interesting to read about Roman Sicily, and thef mystery was engaging. Sadly, the heroine is not particularly like able, which makes it hard to care about what's happening to her.
Todd's first book was better. This one has a marginal plot, although it still has an intriguingly mean protagonist- someone you think you should hate but you don't.
Love this series
